In 1998 the Reformed Church in America, in cooperation with several mission partners, undertook a new venture in South Africa by assuming partial support of Louis (Lou) and Janice (Jan) Haveman as world mission program associates.

Lou & Jan Haveman

Louis and Janice Haveman

Lou's primary responsibility was to assist the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) in developing a countrywide plan for diaconal ministry creating much needed employment opportunities. As coordinator of the program, Lou evaluated existing programs, suggested further possibilities, wrote grant proposals, worked with in-country corporations, and linked Christian businessmen and women from around the world to Christian entrepreneurs in impoverished areas of South Africa.

At Lou's request we got into the business of promoting and selling products made by African artisans, primarily through the website we established and maintain at www.arksvc.com/Unique . Currently available are many examples of African art that are useful as collectibles, gifts and home decor. Most items are handmade. We also helped Lou by setting up this website. From early 2001 if not earlier until December 2004 Lou provided monthly newsletters and other information we used for a website at this location.

Lou's assignment in Africa ended with the close of 2004. With some sadness we have removed all the pages that were here. He has now embarked on a new challenging adventure that you can learn about at www.AfricatoAppalachia.com. We hope you will visit his new website.

More information about Lou's work:

The assignment Lou completed and moved on from at the end of 2004 was directed by the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) in partnership with the URCSA. Christ Memorial Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan, made a special commitment to the program.

The Havemans began their mission service with CRWRC in 1968. Their first assignment was Nigeria, where Lou helped develop an agricultural development program. Then for six years Lou directed all CRWRC programs in Africa, which involved traveling among nine projects in six countries.

The Havemans returned to the U.S. in 1984, where Lou founded a successful real estate business in Lansing, Michigan, and Jan became a nursing supervisor of a managed care company. During this time they completed several volunteer and contract mission assignments to Bangladesh, Rwanda, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.
